Liam's First Holy Communion Dessert Table

Last weekend, we had the pride and privilege to share our eldest son Liam's First Holy Communion.   It is such a special religious milestone, and we brimmed with pride at our young man.

We wanted a small but special celebration and decided to invite our very nearest and dearest family and friends to celebrate with us at home after the church service.

When thinking about themes, because that is what I do, I wanted something symbolic but not overtly religious.   I toyed around with using patterns and colours as a theme and then I thought of stained glass windows - no more symbolic than that!

Onto the invitations and of course Nicole at Pretty and Print knew what I wanted immediately and her papery were nothing short of spectacular.    I boxed up with the invitations and they were a simple and elegant start to our event.

Onto desserts!   Stained glass theme needs to have a stained glass cake and desserts.   That was easy enough to think through, but I wanted to match that with lots of crisp white.  For the backdrop, I went backwards and forwards with many different ideas - but while chatting with my design buddy, we came up with "string art".   That took me way back to school.    So with a big bit of MDF, some nails and a hammer and different coloured string - the backdrop was made and I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it!   It was the perfect silhouette for the table.

Always trying to find a DIY project or trying my hand at my own thing, I wanted to make some of my own risers and cake plates.    The main riser at the back of the table is a long wood piece that I added some decorative wood feet to each end and painted white.   The rectangle cake plates at the front of the table were made in the same way.    This way I could design my own table and design the tableware around my thoughts.

The green cake stands on each side are simple white candle sticks from IKEA with wooden circles secured on top and then painted in my lime green colour.   All of it came together to make the clean look of the table that I wanted.   My table was not a huge table and I needed to utilise my space and I did not want it cluttered at all.   My riser at the back was used as the display piece for the coloured candy in my design colours.    All the candy was supplied by Leanne at Sweet Style.    No fancy glass candy jars here, just plain tall drinking glasses.

Then onto the actual sweets for the sweet table.    The cake – I wanted to make a stained glass effect cake and WOW I loved how it looked.   The  black lines were all piped on in their various lines and then all the windows were hand painted in different shades of the design colours.   This was the perfect centrepiece for the table.   I wanted to have a simple and uncomplicated array of coordinated desserts.   Handpainted watercolour cookies were a colourful addition and the marbled macarons were sensational.   The macarons were made by the macaron goddess Its a Cake by Jhoanee.   Layered and coloured petit cakes stood at the front of the table and were topped with royal icing stained glass disks.   Then the only other desserts were pannacotta shots topped with mini macarons.

Lastly, our celebration was a small family and friends affair and this allowed for small and intimate table arrangements for the guests.    Flowers for each table were the centrepiece and arrangements of blue hydrangeas and baby hydrangeas were natural looking and bought colour to the table.    Little glass jars filled with little flower buds completed the table flowers.    I included the printables into our table setting in the form of placemats for everyone.    I loved how these set off the blue china perfectly.

All in all, we had a beautiful day with our nearest and dearest.   It was a day filled with laughter and love and joy at seeing our boy become a young man.

Please enjoy these images and a little glimpse into our special day!

My boy Liam.    He was actually quite sick in the lead up to this day and was not at all himself.

Sharing the day with so many wonderful people that we are privileged to share our life with.

Ruffled Blooms & Rocking Horse Christening Cake

Beautiful little Siena-Rose celebrated the Christening day today and this ruffley number took centre stage on the cake table.

Siena's mum loved my previous "Isla" cake but we made a few changes. The bottom extended tier was covered in an ombre of pink ruffled blooms and the top tier was given a shiny lustre treatment. The little handmade rocking horse sat a top the entire creation.

All decorations are handmade by myself and completely edible.

The bottom tier is vanilla with raspberry swirl cake with white chocolate ganache and the top tier is vanilla/chocolate marble cake with dark chocolate ganache.

The celebration lunch was held at the gorgeous Pappardellerestaurant in Haberfield. For those of you in Sydney - you may remember Joe from Stars at Gigis. He was a mainstay on the Darling Street strip for many, many years. Pappardelle is his new venture and I cannot wait to get there myself to eat his wonderful food once again!

May God Always Bless You Siena-Rose!

An Ampersand Wedding Cake

This cake was made for a couple who wanted a wedding cake a little bit different.

They wanted no flowers and to incorporate their wedding colours of yellow and shades of grey as well as the ampersand that was a feature on their wedding invitations.

The tiers were covered in a mosaic of grey shades and then the ampersand became the main feature!

Very vogue at the moment!

Congratulations Kim & Corey!

A Grasshopper, Coffee & Hearts Engagement Cake

My lovely client Kylie organised this cake for her brother's engagement. Kylie left the design to me, but wanted to incorporate grasshoppers, coffee and hearts into the cake - everything had a meaning! The grasshoppers and coffee signify their new business, The Hungry Grasshoppers cafe in Haberfield (coming soon) and obviously hearts due to the engagement.

I decided on quirky, funky and a little bit whimsical! The colour scheme I decided on were tones of coffee hues as well as a touch of deep red.The cake is heart shaped and is decorated very simple with a lustre finish and a mosaic of hearts up the sides of the cake in the colour scheme. The coffee cup is fondant covered styrofoam (as I knew they would like to keep it) and the grasshoppers, coffee beans, spoon and saucer are all handmade from fondant. I wanted to keep the grasshoppers fun. So I had them sitting on the edge of the cup with arms around each other, as if they were sipping from the coffee of love.

The coffee froth also has a love heart motif also! At the last moment, I decided to hand paint the couples names on the coffee cup.

The cake is chocolate mud cake with dark chocolate ganache and there was also a separate cutting cake which was white chocolate mud cake with white chocolate ganache.

Congratulations Bren & Dani!

A Ruffled Ombre Moccha Engagement Cake

My gorgeous client Kathy contacted me a while ago to arrange her engagement cake. I was very humbled when I asked her what she would like, she said that she was inspired by the colours I used in my Christmas table last year (shades of moccha) and that she wanted one of my ruffly type cakes with one of my type of flowers!

The venue was more old world, so this was something that fit in quite well with the ambience and her gorgeous sister was setting up a little candy table to go with these colours.

I decided on an ombre of ruffled blooms for the bottom tier (I am guessing there is maybe about 1100+ ruffled blooms there - RSI hello!!). The top tier was a textured look with some embossed bands and fondant pearls and then a single ombre ruffled big bloom on top.

There was also a set of ombre ruffled bloom cupcakes to go with, which I never got a chance to photograph.

The bottom tier is white chocolate raspberry mud cake with white chocolate ganache and the top tier is chocolate sponge cake with dark chocolate ganache.

Congratulations!

Buttons & Butterflies Christening Cake

My client requested my butterflies cake design, with some changes to match the Christening theme.

The invitations and the bomboniere were all "Cute as a Button" themed and in these lovely shades of pastel. I decided to use the button motif on the middle tier and have them in rows (as in the invitation design). The butterflies I changed up a little bit and dusted them in shades of pink shimmer. Such a little girl's celebration cake! The cake looked spectacular at the venue, Olivetto, which is on the waterside at Rhodes.

The bottom tier is chocolate mud cake with dark chocolate ganache. The middle and top tiers are marbled vanilla and chocolate sponge cakes with white chocolate ganache.

May God Bless you!

Autumn Leaves Wedding Cake

My lovely bride Natalie contacted me about a year ago to request a cake. She wanted something autumn themed and wanted it teamed with crisp white (like her dress). A more perfect couple you would not meet and it was such a complete pleasure to make this cake for them.

From the start, this wedding sounded like a dream. Being held today at the Rhododendron Gardens in Wollongong, it is set in a beautiful marquee in the stunning gardens which I can only imagine is going to be filled with millions of these same leaves!

When the design for the cake was being made, the brief was classic elegance with the beauty of the autumn leaf colours. We agreed on cascading leaves down the side of the 3 tiered cake. Such a simple design, but the colours were just gorgeous! There were 100+ hand dusted and coloured leaves draping over and down the sides of this cake. I can almost hear the crackle of the leaves!I cannot wait to see some images from the wedding!

The bottom tier is mocha mud with dark chocolate ganache, the middle tier is a gluten free chocolate mud with dark chocolate ganache and the top tier is white chocolate raspberry mud with white chocolate ganache.

Congrats Natalie & Bos!

Peach & Aubergine Engagement Cake

Hayley contacted me a while ago to discuss some options for her engagement cake.

Her design request was something quite simple with some of my "big" flowers and to incorporate some of her upcoming wedding colours of peach, aubergine and a earthy green.

The bottom tier is an extended tier with ivory quartrefoil stencilling. The top tier was left simple with the adornment of the flowers.  I decided to make the big ruffled blooms peach to match the colour tone with the green for the foliage and the berries for the extra aubergine colour punch. There are 2 open big ruffled blooms and 3 smaller ruffled buds in the arrangements.  All the flowers are handmade from fondant.

The bottom tier is white chocolate raspberry mud cake with white chocolate ganache. The top tier is dense carrot & walnut cake with white chocolate ganache.

Congratulations Hayley & Ryan!

St Joan of Arc Christening Cake

A lovely repeat client of mine ordered this cake for her daughter's Christening day.

This cake has a lot of meaning. Olivia's middle name is "Joan" and so to incorporate this, she decided to make the make a Joan of Arc theme. Hence the Collosseum as the "cake" and then a sugar Joan and her horse made the whole scene.

This cake had me stumped for a while and I worked for quite some time to work out the best way to pull it together. The cake had so much meaning, I wanted to give it proper justice. I Google imaged so many different photos of Joan and her horse and this is my interpretation.

The client was completed floored by the cake and "exceeded every expectation she had!"

Can't beat that!

May God Bless you Always!

Ruffles, Booties & Blooms Naming Day Cake

My lovely client Louise (who was married 2 days ago and was the recipient of my stencilled cake with ivory roses) also ordered this cake for her daughter Taia's Naming Day which took place yesterday.

The design was left completely to me. I was only informed that it should not be religious and that she would like to incorporate the colours of pink and mint green. I had seen a cake on Pinterest a while ago and loved the effect of the cake. I used the design as an inspiration starting point and went from there.

I thought that booties would look great on top. I wanted something different to what I had seen before, so to tie in with the ruffled flowers, I made some ruffled booties. These turned out soooo super sweet, didn't want to let go of them!  I finished the cake off with some big ruffled blooms across the side and some coordinating fan circles.

The cake is a white chocolate raspberry mud cake with white chocolate ganache.

May God Bless You Taia!
