Anthropology High tea Cake & Desserts

Natalie from Events By Nat recently styled an Anthropology themed high tea for the current winter issue of My little jedi magazine (available now).

Nat was shooting the high tea down in Bowral and obviously wanted to keep to the anthropology feel. Vintage was the name of the game and a colour palette of ivory, chocolate and shades of magenta was the design inspiration.

As the cakes and sweets design was left to me, I kept to a fairly classic, vintage feel to the desserts and concentrated on the vintage buttons that Nat used as well as some big blooms.

This was the cake as the centrepiece. Very simple and effective decoration of an oyster lustre finish and big ruffled blooms adorned the middle tier.

Cakes for LUXE Photo Shoot

A few months ago, I was asked by Lina of Chanele Rose Flowers to make some cakes for her upcoming LUXE photo shoot.

All I knew was that the theme was LUXE and the colour palette to be used was gold, silver, peach and ivory.    I felt very honoured that alongside my cakes, Patricia from Yummy Cupcakes was also asked to make a cake also.   I was a tad nervous as Patricia is my idol for all things cake, so I needed to think!

I decided to get my inspiration from the colour palette as well as from couture fashion.   To me, nothing screams luxe more than sequins, ruffles and stripes.

So, to the drawing board I went and this was the result!

My Sequinned Metallic Cake

Based on the colour scheme of the shoot, I wanted a cake that screamed LUXE! Metallics do that for me as well as couture elements like sequins, ruffles and stripes.

The first of my trio, was the sequinned cake. The background of the cake is peach metallic coloured and then it was pain stakingly covered in 3000+ tony fondant sequins and then hand painted. To see this cake shimmer in the light was a thing of beauty for me!

My Art Deco Inspired LUXE cake.

When thinking of this cake for the trio, I wanted a modern art deco type of cake, so to start I positioned the tiers to one side for a more modern feel. Then the extended bottom tier was covered in stripes going different ways and then all hand painted in metallic tones of gold, peach and ivory.

The top 2 tiers were left plain in a ivory metallic finish and then I included a metallic fan detail to cascade from the top.

The Romantic Ruffle Cake

I angst over the design of the 3rd cake and wanted to do a ruffle cake of some sort, but something different. I opted for a single wide ruffle that opened at the front to an ivory metallic base. The top tier was simple adorned with little ruffled blooms with gold shimmery centres.

Nutty Chocolate Pavlova by Blissfully Sweet

Let me start by saying that this is the EASIEST recipe to try and you can do it in sooo many different ways!

Christmas at our place usually concludes with a pavlova, of some variety!   Nothing beats a pav!   I mean seriously, after a huge lunch or dinner and it is generally hot, the last thing we feel like at our place is something heavy for dessert!   Something light, something flavourful .... something YUM basically!

This nutty chocolate pav fits the bill!   Not only does it deliver on flavour, it is easy and it is a show stopper!

I made this recipe and the pavlova tree design for the Christmas Issue of My Little Jedi, see the link to the magazine here.   Below you will see 3 different versions of the same recipe: the pavlova tree, the pavlova in a jar and the 3 tiered pavlova.   You can also make mini individual pavlovas for cocktails.

First up is the Pavolva Tree.   Below are some photos of the pavlova tree assembly and just how easy it is to make (maybe 2 minutes it took!).

All photos are courtesy of Sweet Style.

Version 2 of this pavlova, is the pav in the jar.  This is great as take home gifts or a nice little homemade Christmas gift.   Do the same assembly as the tree, just ensure that when you make your rounds of pavlova shells, that you make them small enough to fit inside the jar.

Secure the jar with a nice tag and bingo, pav in a jar!  Why not even give your gifts the recipe as a bonus!

Try and make these as close to giving as possible and leave refrigerated!

The thrid version is the tiered pavlova.   I decided to make a 3 tiered version of this same recipe for a Christmas lunch.   It was a hit!   So yummy and a put the oven temperature up a little higher (+20oC) and the meringue was a little chewier and it was sooooo yummy!

There you are - same recipe, three different ways!   I can already think of even more ways!!

Nutty Chocolate Pavlova Tree Recipe

6 egg whites (room temperature)
330 gms caster sugar
1 tbs cornflour
1 tsp balsamic vinegar
25gms cocoa powder
6 Ferrero chocolates, crushed
600mls thickened cream
1 vanilla bean, scraped
1/3 cup icing sugar
Pistacchio nuts, hulled and crushed
Punnet of blueberries

1. Preheat oven to 140°C. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper.

2. Using an electric mixer, beat eggwhites in a large bowl until soft peaks form. Gradually add in the caster sugar. Continue beating until meringue is thick and glossy, about 5-7 minutes. Sift cocoa powder into meringue and fold in the crushed ferrero chocolates.

3. If making the pavlova tree, spoon the meringue mixture into rounds on your baking paper using different size circles. This will achieve the Christmas tree cone shape. Make as many rounds as you like and make the tree as high or wide as you like.

4. Put the trays in the oven and immediately lower the temperature to 120°C. Depending on the size of your shells the cooking time will take between 1 and 1½ hours. Keep checking. The shells will be ready when the surfaces are hard. Turn the oven off and leave the door ajar until the oven is cooled.

5. To make chantilly cream, beat thickened cream together with the scraped vanilla bean and icing sugar until stiff peaks are achieved.

6. To assemble, get your favourite cake stand or plate and place a small blob of cream on the stand and start layering the pavlova shells, with the larger circles on the bottom and work your way up. In between each layer, pipe the chantilly cream with sprinkle with the pistachio nuts and blueberries. Top the tree with a swirl of cream and a luscious blueberry.

7. Serve and enjoy!

** To make the pavlova in the jar, make the circles small enough to fit inside the jar.
***  To make the tiered pavlova, make the tiers the desired sizes.  To achieve the tiered look, make 3 different size circles.

My 40th Vintage Elegance Themed Birthday Bash

BEWARE .... Image overload to commence, too many nice photos not to show them!

The time had come.  I had planned it for months, no years maybe (LOL)!   I knew I had always wanted a party to celebrate, being a party type of gal that I am.   But now that I am 40 I wanted something that was grown up and elegant - something to look forward to.  Lets face it, I am faced with kids parties quite often throughout the year and now it came time to celebrate my day, and in my way!   And my way, includes a lot of little details!

Then came the ideas ..... and they kept coming!

When it comes down to it, I am a vintage loving gal.   Nothing modern for this chick, so a vintage theme was born.   What comes to mind with vintage ..... paper doilies!   I found some great doilies at my local supplies store and used this as a centrepiece for everything .... the invitations, the decorations, the centrepieces, the bomboniere.

For the invitations, I used this beautiful Christina Re feather paper and designed an elegant invitation design.  I then wrapped the doily around like an envelope and secured with a little black ribbon.  Black and white was the other part of the theme.

I only had a small, intimate gathering.  I wanted to take the time to make every detail a little bit special.   I am lucky enough to call Leanne from Sweet Style a friend as well as a business associate.   Leanne became the touch stone of all my creative ideas and became my partner in crime for organising this little shindig.   We worked together to create and the decorations and more so, I was very excited that she also agreed to take the happy snaps for the evening!  Lucky me!   All photos you see here are courtesy of Sweet Style.

When choosing my venue I wanted something with great food and ambience. Banjo Paterson is such a beautiful location, the sandstone cottage is as gorgeous in as it is out and it is located right on the waterside in Gladesville!

My room had beautiful sandstone walls, so I wanted to showcase these as part of my dessert buffet.

As part of the whole vintage theme I did not want a plain restaurant table for the dessert table, I wanted something that also fit the theme.   This console table is from my own house and I knew it would work.   The lanterns under the table were originally going to be hanging above, however this was not possible on the day, so at the last minute I decided to cluster them under the table as a feature - I prefer it this way!

More on the desserts soon .....

Onto the decorations.  There was NEVER going to be any balloons at this birthday!   I see them everyday!   I wanted flowers, candles (at 40, candle light is our best friend) and mirrors.  So on the morning of the big day, I was up and at the flower markets at 5am!   Such a nerve wracking experience, almost surreal!  Those forklift drivers are a law onto themselves!   However, once a parking space was found, ahhhh the joy!   I found exactly what I was after, peonies, peonies and more peonies!   I teamed the peonies with these beautiful looking little blooms and these pink honeycomb looking flowers.   All the vases were covered in paper doilies.  I wanted table arrangements that were effortless and not forced, something that looked just like they had been picked out of the garden.

Each table had mirrored placemat centrepieces (Ikea) and I then I scattered tea lights and black plinth candles about among the flowered vases.   Each table had a table number that lit up with the candles.

The chairs were simply draped in black and white strands of this marshmallow wool string.   Simple and effective.   I also made, with the help of 2 delightfully wonderful girlfriends, some string chandeliers that were hung above the tables.    We did make around 20 of these, but due to time constraints, could only manage to hang a small few.

It then came time to put the table together.

The table in all its finery.   All the beautiful cake stands and cloches are courtesy of Leanne at Sweet Style(again lucky me!).   I also placed the mirrors over the cake table and when the candles were lit at night .... it was truly magical!

Being a HUGE Maggie Austin fan, I have always wanted to do a ruffle cake.   Now, my party was for 30 people.   I knew I would not need that much cake, but I wanted to display the cakes I wanted to make, so these 3 cakes are display cakes.  I loved the look of 3 cakes displayed together.  Each design was carefully thought of and chosen so that they each complimented the other.

The quilling cake.   Black fondant is so hard to work with and it marks very easily!   I decided to use the quilling technique to make these white bows around the cake.   I then draped black around the top to come together in a brooch type of fashion.   I LOVE this cake!

I thought about the 3rd cake for a while and  I remembered seeing an image a while ago of these cascading petals.   I thought that it would look so dramatic in black and when I started I loved it.   I now call this cake the petals cake.

Black and white theme, calls for black and white cake pops.   Dark chocolate devils food cake coated in white callebaut chocolate and topped with a black fondant blooms.   They all stood together under their cloche.

When it came time for cupcakes, this was what people were going to be eating, so I decided they should eat MY favourite flavour .... lemon poppyseed cake.   Topped with lemon scented buttercream swirls and topped with a black fondant bloom.   These stood on little mini cake stands and were also scattered over the mirrors.

I wanted macarons as a part of the treats.  So some simple vanilla macarons with dark chocolate ganache were piled high on these crystal hobnail compotes.

Looking great from every angle.

It was time to go home then and get ready.   The time had come.   Here I am, all bedecked and ready to celebrate.

Here I am with my hubby .... isn't he gorgeous!  Awwww, LOVE him!

Gorgeous night, gorgeous venue..... the ambience was set.

As the sun was setting, doily covered luminaries were set on the grass and beckoned everyone into our room, the scene was set!

Candle lights, camera, action!   LOVE it!

Handmade placecards and menus designed in theme using the paper doilies.    The menu was magnificent and food mouthwatering.

Being a good hostess and checking everything was going well!

Everyone enjoyed the atmosphere and spent the night chatting away.

Lots of fun and laughs were had too!

Enjoying the night!

The dessert table was then opened and people got to take some treats home in these little black paper bags (from Sweet Style) which were simple adorned in paper doilies and a mini wooden peg.

As bomboniere, the guests got to take home their own cake to eat.  The cake in the jars were devils food cake layered in vanilla bean buttercream.  I topped these with paper doilies, and a black and white striped ribbon held a stamped THANK YOU wooden spoon in place.   Jars and wooden spoons available at Sweet Style.

Time to open a few presents, no brand dropping at all but Tiffany, Swarovski and Antico Murano were involved!   However, this personalised card holds a special place in my heart!  Thoughtfulness is next to godliness in my book and this is a perfect example of that!

and to close I leave you with this.  This is a photo of Leanne (Sweet Style) and I.   Leanne and I came together through our love of parties and all things styling.  I am very lucky to call her a friend and indeed she is.   I cannot thank Leanne enough for her generous giving of time and advice for my party as well as providing me with all those fabulous stands and platters.   However, these photos are how I will always remember this night and I have Leanne to thank for this.   She is such a beautiful and thoughtful photographer and person and this shows through in her photos.

Thank you for taking this (long) journey into my 40th party.   I hope you enjoyed it as much as I.

xx

Today, my party was featured on the Amy Atlas blog.   See the feature here.   A great night, great party, great photos and now a feature - yeah for me!

Olivia & Elan's 1st Monkey Birthday Cake & Dessert Table

I cannot believe that the time has flown by so quickly and it was a year ago that I met the two most delicious little girls in the world .... Olivia & Elan!  I am lucky enough to share my birthday with them, so the time had come to have a party!

Tina decided on a monkey themed party for the girls because they are her cheeky little monkeys.   She had some super cute invitations made up from Vistaprint and from there I imagined what I could create for them.

This is the first time that I would have to set up a dessert table off site and it was a little unnerving.   Tina used her bar area for the display and it was an L-shaped area and worked really well I thought.

As usual, everything turned crazy before the event and without countless other orders on, I needed to get my act together and do something.   I knew I wanted to do something with the hessian I used for Noah's party and keep the colour theme to the neutral, pinks and yellow (for bananas)!   That was where the thinking stalled and for a long time! ....... I think I started getting my act together last Thursday (3 days before).   I then decided what treats to make and also what cake.

I wanted to make this a special day for them to remember as well as for Tina and Peter to look back on in photos.

Come into the jungle and see for yourself!

The table put together.

Olivia - makes me melt!

Elan - makes me smile!

Cousins to enjoy the day with - Ben, Noah & Liam!

I went to Tina's house the day before to drop off and try things out because I still had no idea.   However, when I got there it all fell into place and this is what I achieve ..... my own cake and treats shop window.  It felt like being in your own cake shop.   The lanterns were a last minute addition because I did not know how the hanging situation would be.   I knew I definitely wanted to use the hessian, the crates and the spice rack.  I did not want any white, I wanted it look very whimsical!  I think it was achieved!

The cake.   I wanted to again keep the cake whimsical and not overly fussy .... but still fun!   I decided to make some changes to my previous monkey cake design (click here) and girly it up and add some other fun elements.   Olivia & Elan Monkey sat on top, but their cheeky friends were "hanging" about the cake.  One was doing a handstand off the bottom tier, one hung off the side and the other sat with a pile of bananas.
The bottom tier is white chocolate raspberry mud cake with white chocolate ganache.  The top tier is chocolate sponge cake with dark chocolate ganache.   All other elements are completely handmade and edible.
The beautiful pink milk glass cake stand is from Sweet Style.

Bananas were the theme of the cookies,   The cookies are vanilla bean sugar cookies and topped with a fondant banana.  I displayed the cookies on a bed of strawberry jelly beans (available at Sweet Style).

The cupcakes are vanilla cupcakes and have alternate pink and yellow themed monkey face toppers.   These monkey faces matched some cute little onesies that Tina had made up for the girls.
The gorgeous pink hobnail glass cake stands are from Sweet Style.

One of my favourite items.   I reused my rejuvenated spice rack from Noah's party and used to display all the elements of the table.   It actually reminded me of a little shop window.

Four layered jelly cups in shades of pink and yellow were a hit and very effective too!   These were displayed on my old wooden chopping boards.

Pannacotta shots!   Everyone loves these and it is ALWAYS requested.   At the last minute when I went to make them, I decided to make them two toned to match the theme.   The pink and yellow looked gorgeous together and these shots were slurped down so fast with lots of "mmmmms" to be heard!

My other favourite part.   This was not in the plan.  I set the table up the day before and thought it needed something.   I remembered the little tea sets that I had given the girls at Easter and decided to use this as a table prop - LOVE!   The little pink and yellow chocolate cups were a last minute find at Coles!  Colour themed and nothing to do - MORE LOVE!
The pink hobnail compote bowl is from Sweet Style.   I filled these with bananas - look complete!

Pink baking cups filled with strawberry jelly beans and wooden cones filled with little lollies.   Simple additions that some colour.

and the Candy station.   Glass jars filled with twisty marshmallows, sour straps, meringues and choc coated bananas.
The jars with the sour straps and bananas are from Sweet Style and the other two are from my own personal collection.

and the gorgeous family in their own cake shop.

and lastly, Tina and I with the girls.   I had so much fun creating this for Olivia & Elan and it was a fantastic day filled with family and friends and lots of treats to spoil the girls!

I am pleased and honoured to say that Olivia & Elan's monkey party has been featured on the Amy Atlas Blog today.  Click here to see.  Thanks Lisa and Amy for the feature!  WOW!
